Reason: Update on ORAS and SM

A rematch or re-boxing (Japanese: 再戦 rematch) is a second or subsequent battle against a Trainer or Pokémon.

In the core series games, it is mandatory for the role player to defeat certain Trainers to advance inside the game. Technically, if the player is defeated, they are given the chance to battle this opponent again until defeated (disallowment infrequent circumstances), merely this isn't considered a rematch.

Most of the time, however, if a Trainer is defeated, that Trainer will not be available for a rematch until certain weather condition accept been met. When Trainers unremarkably agree to rematch, their Pokémon will accept become stronger (level up or development), or they would already take acquired more Pokémon (sometimes from another region, once the histrion has obtained the National Pokédex).

Types of rematch

Regular Trainers

From Generation II onwards, with the exception of Pokémon Black and White and X and Y, some regular Trainers found along normal routes and caves tin can be challenged for a rematch.

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player can exchange Pokégear telephone numbers with specific Trainers, allowing them to contact the thespian for a rematch. Note that Trainers have to be rebattled every bit shortly as possible, otherwise the chance to do so will disappear.

In Pokémon Aureate, Silvery, and Crystal, the number of difficulty levels and triggers are divers individually for each Trainer. Certain rematches are available just in Gold and Argent, while others are but in Crystal. The following events are triggers for new rematches:

  • Reaching a new city/town in Johto, starting with Goldenrod City
  • Reaching the Lake of Rage
  • Defeating Team Rocket at Mahogany Boondocks or Goldenrod Metropolis
  • Condign Champion
  • Returning the Machine Part to the Kanto Power Plant

Additionally, in Gold and Silver, the actor volition battle the strongest squad bachelor, only in Crystal, each squad has to exist battled in social club (including fighting the initial team once more).

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the Trainers' teams take 3 different difficulty levels: the outset level is used in the first rematch, the 2d after the player has showtime entered the Hall of Fame, and the third subsequently the player has obtained all 16 Badges.

In Pokémon Scarlet, Sapphire, and Emerald, the PokéNav'southward Trainer's Eyes or Match Telephone call has like functions to the Pokégear, keeping track of Trainers who somewhen want to re-battle the player. Regular Trainers are eligible for rematches after obtaining the Residuum Badge; in one case it is obtained, if the player is on a map with eligible Trainers, each Trainer on the map has a split 31% risk to demand a rematch every 255 steps.[1]

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Blastoff Sapphire, the Trainer's Middle function returns, and Trainers are ready for a rematch more frequently than in Generation Three; in these games, the Trainers' teams amend as the player progresses through the game, and are at their strongest after the player has entered the Hall of Fame.

Reddish uses the Vs. Seeker on Route 25. Three Trainers wish to accept a rematch.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, while outdoors, the player tin apply the Vs. Seeker to randomly brand nearby Trainers fix for a rematch. Certain Trainers have stronger teams, depending on how far the actor is through the game, every bit long as they have defeated that Trainer's previous party. New Vs. Seeker parties are unlocked at the following events:

  • Obtaining the Vs. Seeker
  • Arriving in Celadon Urban center FR LG /defeating Fantina D P /defeating Crasher Wake Pt
  • Arriving in Fuchsia City FR LG /capturing or defeating the cover Legendary Pokémon D P Pt

In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, as the player progresses through the game, the Trainers' Pokémon are battled at higher levels, and will be at their strongest later on the thespian has entered the Hall of Fame. Some Trainers may replace their Pokémon. Pokémon Breeders in Black two and White two will re-challenge the thespian upon sight (as long as the histrion has left the area since their final battle), even if the thespian had previously defeated them; however, their teams remain the same during each battle.

In Pokémon X and Y, Trainers in the Boxing Chateau can be battled each time that Trainer has entered the Battle Chateau. Only those whose rank is the same as or lower than the player'due south will appear. The player tin purchase writs to accept an issue on three different factors (political party levels, prize money, and Trainer arrival charge per unit) for the residue of that day, although issued writs can be swapped out if the new ane has the aforementioned type of effect.

Wild Pokémon from in-game events

Reason: Are effort values awarded in mandatory captures? Do rematches also apply for wild Mythical Pokémon? Stakataka/Blacephalon in USUM: do they reappear if defeated?

In all games, being defeated by a Legendary Pokémon does non cause it to disappear. In all games in which roaming Pokémon exist, fleeing from them does not crusade them to permanently disappear; the game simply behaves the same as if they were the ones to abscond.

Prior to Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, fleeing from stationary Legendary Pokémon causes the Pokémon to permanently disappear.

In Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald, if the histrion flees from a stationary Legendary Pokémon, it will reappear upon leaving and re-entering the room. The game informs the player that "The <Pokémon> flew away!". If the player defeats an event sectional Legendary/Mythical Pokémon, it reappears after the player adjacent enters the Hall of Fame.

In Pokémon Platinum, if the role player defeats or flees from a stationary Legendary Pokémon, it reappears later on the player next enters the Hall of Fame. If the player defeats a roaming Pokémon, it will reappear simply after the player has re-triggered the event which caused it to beginning roaming; for example, the player must talk to Professor Oak to cause a Legendary bird to resume roaming. If the player flees from or defeats Origin Forme Giratina in the Distortion World, it will reappear in Turnback Cavern in its Altered Forme, where it behaves in the same way as all other stationary Legendary Pokémon.

This was extended to all stationary Pokémon (red Gyarados, Sudowoodo, and Snorlax) in HeartGold and SoulSilver. If Suicune is defeated or fled from, Eusine will comment on this fact, and information technology will instead reappear at the Burned Belfry, where it behaves in the same way every bit all other stationary Legendary Pokémon. If Ho-Oh HG or Lugia SS is defeated or fled from during the storyline, the Kimono Girls will annotate on this fact before leaving; yet, the Pokémon still behave similar any other stationary Pokémon.

In Pokémon Black and White, Reshiram B or Zekrom Due west must exist defenseless; defeating, fleeing from or losing to the Pokémon does non cause information technology to disappear, the battle yields no experience, and the story cannot be progressed until it is caught. Yet, if the actor has a total political party and PC, information technology is possible to progress without communicable it, in which case it instead appears at Dragonspiral Tower later defeating Ghetsis, where it behaves in the same way as all other stationary Legendary Pokémon, except that it will still non requite whatsoever experience points.

In Pokémon Ten and Y, Xerneas 10 or Yveltal Y must be caught; defeating, fleeing from or losing to it does not cause it to disappear, the battle yields no feel, and the story cannot be progressed until it is caught. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage Arrangement does non go bachelor until after the actor catches it, so it is non possible to avoid the capture even if the player'south political party and PC are both full.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, if the thespian defeats Groudon OR or Kyogre As instead of catching them in the main story, they will reappear in the Cavern of Origin afterwards entering the Hall of Fame. During the Delta Episode, Rayquaza must be caught; defeating, fleeing from or losing to it does not cause it to disappear, the battle yields no feel, and the story cannot be progressed until it is caught. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage System does not become available until after the player catches Rayquaza, so it is not possible to avoid the capture even if the player's party and PC are both full. If the histrion flees from or defeats Deoxys in during the Delta Episode, it will reappear at the Dragonhark chantry atop the Sky Colonnade afterward entering the Hall of Fame again, where it behaves in the same way as all other stationary Legendary Pokémon.

In Pokémon Sunday and Moon, Solgaleo S or Lunala G must be caught; defeating, fleeing from or losing to it does non cause it to disappear, the battle yields no experience, and the story cannot be progressed until it is caught. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage Organisation does not get bachelor until later on the actor catches the Legendary Pokémon. If the player defeats, flees from, or loses to Tapu Koko instead of catching it during the post-credits outcome, Lillie will comment on this fact, and Tapu Koko will immediately exist available to battle over again at the Ruins of Disharmonize. If the player defeats, flees from or loses to a roaming Ultra Beast or Necrozma, information technology will continue to reappear in the area until it is caught (the game reassures the player that it is notwithstanding in the area).

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Solgaleo US or Lunala UM must be caught for it to disappear; defeating, fleeing from or losing to it does non cause it to disappear and the battle yields no experience. The 31st box in the Pokémon Storage System does not become bachelor until after the player catches the Legendary Pokémon.

In Pokémon Trading Card Game and Pokémon Card GB2: Hither Comes Team GR!, all duelists are available for rematches. However, in some cases, a duelist switches their deck permanently at some point. For instance, the rival character Ronald uses four decks in the kickoff game: the starting time three decks are used in a single duel each, and then the fourth deck is used whenever the player challenges him for the Champion championship at the Pokémon Dome. Similarly, in the second game, some Club Masters apply a sure deck on their outset duel, and then apply a different deck in all subsequent duels.
